Because albatrosses live in the real ocean they are very difficult to study at sea. But here, as they were attracted by the meat and then the cuttlefish they are at hand and easy to catch. Especially early morning when the winds are down and the birds cannot fly. SOSSA, a volunteer research association, realised 50 years ago the potential of the area for albatross research and has been doing bird banding since its creation,THE ONLY CONTINENTAL AND ONE OF THE LONGEST PROGRAMMES IN THE WORLD.

Birds are caught using a simple round net thrown from a tiny speed boat. A very effective tool as long as the sea is calm and there is no wind.



Les albatros sont les oiseaux du grand océan et à ce titre très difficiles à étudier. Mais attirés par la viande puis par les seiches, ils viennet ici près de la côte et, par conséquent, deviennent accessibles. Surtout le matin quand le vent qui leur permet de voler ne souffle pas encore. L'association SOSSA a découvert il y a près de 50 ans l'extraordinaire potentiel du site et entrepris une étude via le baguage qui dure depuis. Tôt le matin avant que le vent ne se lève, depuis un tout petit bateau, les albatross sont attrapés simplement avec un filet rond . Un moyen simple et efficace tant que la mer reste calme.
